First Things First - Know Their Taste
Obviously, you wouldn't buy head banging metal if your friend prefers easy listening or southern gospel. It wouldn't be something that they would enjoy and it wouldn't look like you cared enough to buy them something special.

If your friend has a favorite band or two then it's easy ... just pick up a CD by that band. But if they don't, or if they already have all of the releases by a particular artist, then compilation CD's are a good option.

Buying a video of their favorite band to go along with a CD is a great combo. If your loved one is an avid reader and he/she likes the "behind the scenes" kind of stuff, a biography about his/her favorite artist makes a wonderful gift.
